Dissociative Identity Disorder AKA DID is a mental health condition formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder. It is a trauma disorder that changes the way your brain develops. In a typical child around the ages of 6-9 their "ego states", sense of identity, and personality will form into one cohesive sense of identity and self. In a child with DID, trauma creates dissociative barriers between these states causing them to over time form into multiple states of identity. These states of identity are called alters. Alters are created to be what the brain needs to survive in that moment and because of this they all can have their own names, pronouns, ages, looks, memories, and sense of self. Often but not always there is sever amnesia between alters so what alter remembers another one may not.links to more info
